Iowa Attorneys for Vaginal Mesh Failure Litigation

Pelvic organ prolapse, or POP, is a natural weakening of the structures that support the uterus, bladder and rectum, causing those organs to sag against each other or the pelvis bones. Stress urinary incontinence, or SUI, is accidental leakage of urine occurring when coughing or sneezing, during exercise or sex, or from other bending or pressure on the abdomen. Both conditions are common, but they can cause discomfort, embarrassment and more serious health issues.

Surgical repair is a common remedy for prolapse or incontinence. Transvaginal surgery mesh was first introduced in the 1990s as an alternative to traditional methods. Since then, dozens of pharmaceutical makers have jumped on the bandwagon to supply mesh for these routine procedures.

In 2008, the FDA revealed in a public caution that at least 1,000 women had experienced complications associated with surgical mesh. In July 2011, the FDA released a second, stronger warning and reported that another 1,500 women had complained of post-surgical complications from vaginal mesh failure. The FDA warning alerted physicians and the public that surgical mesh poses a greater risk than other surgical treatments. Nonetheless, vaginal mesh surgeries are still widely performed across the U.S.

You should seek medical treatment and contact our attorneys if you have experienced symptoms of transvaginal mesh failure after POP or SUI surgery such as:

  • Infection or bleeding
  • Recurrence of incontinence or prolapse
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Sharp pain, chronic pain or pain during sex
  • Vaginal scarring or mesh erosion through vaginal tissues
